A Morning Away

Excited by a sunny day, I jumped on a train this morning and headed towards the sea to a town outside of Rome called Ostia Antica.

I sometimes forget how close Rome is to the sea, less than an hour away. There is a remnant of an little village or borgo here, so I stopped off to paint in the warm morning sun.

Being in Rome is so exciting that I can forget to get out and explore. Ostia Antica was ancient Rome's harbor and is enormous and is by no means completely excavated. I didn't take the time to visit this site today, that is for longer days in summer.

Instead the little borgo is just two blocks surrounded by part of an ancient wall and castle. It was silent and sleepy and the piazza was only populated by sunbathing cats.

If you've ever flown into Fiumicino airport, then you've passed right over Ostia. I suggest taking the time to visit this marvelous place next time you're in town.
